Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Remy Dou
When setting out to develop a classroom resource, most publishers devote meaningful attention to content. Equally valuable, if not more so, are the perspectives of seasoned educators that understand both the systemic atmosphere of education and day-to-day encounters with young children. Covering everything from atoms to nuclear fission, Mullins more than adequately addresses the issue of content, having gone the extra mile to consult an academic expert. Elastic, geothermal, and nuclear energy all make an appearance. Lamentably, this work almost completely fails to meet even the basic educational needs teachers and schools. Although geared for upper elementary students, the narrative covers scientific concepts way beyond the scope appropriated to these grade levels as suggested by national and state science education standards. In the classroom, the standards guide the curriculum, and failure to have addressed this reveals a serious faux pas. Educators willing to look past this will face a barrage of information a mile wide but only an inch deep, and captions on photographs sometimes obscure the hard-to-process information. Lack of depth keeps this from being an effective reference tool despite its wide coverage. The same can be said of some of the suggested "resources." Despite these flaws, the text showcases Mullins' talent to communicate information to children in a welcoming manner. Part of the "True Book" series. Reviewer: Remy Dou
