Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Three attractive British imports that look at how today's technology will transform tomorrow's world. Energy focuses on new ways of using and conserving existing and future resources. Structures discusses the latest developments in engineering and predicts further innovations. Transportation examines new types of vehicles, showing how people may be traveling in the next century. The glossaries are limited, however, and readers may not understand such terms as ``prototype,'' ``levitation,'' ``articulated,'' ``proton exchange membrane,'' and ``particle accelerator.'' Lots of full-color photographs and drawings help explain the workings of wind turbines, solar cells, magnetically levitated trains, ``chimney effect'' air conditioning, and anti-lock braking systems. These overviews provide just enough information to lead curious readers to more detailed works, such as Thomas Gunning's Dream Cars (Dillon, 1989). David Darling's Up, Up and Away and Spiderwebs to Skyscrapers (both Dillon, 1991) look at the science behind the technology.-Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL
