Editorial Reviews

Booknews
A textbook for an introductory course, focused on helping students get a feel for flow patterns, pressure variation, and shear stress in fluid flow. The first half is generally devoted to basic principles, though some practical applications are also demonstrated in the examples and problems. The second half surveys applications of the principals to engineering problems. The sixth edition includes new material on deriving the Navier- Stokes equation and the visualization of flow, extended discussion of other topics, and new and revised problems. No dates are noted for earlier editions. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
Booknews
New edition of a text that guides readers from fundamental fluid mechanics concepts to real-world engineering applications. Through physical descriptions, photographs, illustrations, and fully worked example problems, Crowe and John A. Roberson (Washington State U.) and Donald F. Elger (U. of Idaho) provide a way for students to get the feel for flow patterns, pressure variation, and shear stress in fluid flow. About 1,100 open-ended and computer-oriented problems relate to the application of fluid mechanics principles. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

You have my sympathy if you have to use this book for your class!

You have my sympathy if you have to use this book for your class! The book leaves out many steps when explaining the theory as well as worked out problems. Only the filler information in the book is clear. There is too much empty space in the text book that could have been used for filling in those steps in the problems that are missing. The author will spend time going over trivial statics but leave out many or all the steps when solving a differential equation. The illustrations appear to be done by the author and not an artist. For a material that is very visual you would need good drawings to relate the ideas quickly and accurately. It does not seem that the problems worked out, or the material in the chapter is sufficient to solve the problems at the end of the chapter. Do I like this book? No, I had a differential equations book that similarly left out many steps, that is why my ability to do differential equations is not strong. When a book leaves out things you have to spend more time with the book. A good book can let a bad teacher have many A students. I have a bad book and a bad teacher, and not enough time to read another book. Thanks Mr. Crowe for the ability to find a good sales representative to push his book on my school, I hope someone is happy for it.
