"Engineering Mathematics" is the text book I wish I had in High School and College in the '50's and '60's. I learned applied mathematics piecemeal in several classes over the years. In the math classes, the course covered proofs and theoretical math as well as applied math. The math tools used in professions are more specialized. This book bridges that gap. Applied math is the set of tools used by professionals in their various professions. Very useful tools used in analysis and design. The design of the book takes advantage of learning aids: focus, interactive involvement, identification of mistakes with immediate correct answers, building on concepts. Each topic is separate, clearly explained and interactively involves the reader in using the math. Hints are available to help correct or reinforce the concepts. Examples are included which reinforce understanding of the math tool, but not so many as to burden the flow. This book is a useful reference when I need to refresh myself in how the math works and its application. Almost everything I need is in the book. I like to browse through a topic, then go into the detail where needed. I liked the online tutorial, as well, since it involves solving and entering answers in real time, where errors and correct answers immediately pop up. Computer applications such as MS Excel are also explained. This reinforces learning and makes the effort of learning much more efficient. I was disappointed in the companion website which promised "a growing resource to accompany the text including mathematical questions set within engineering and scientific contexts." I would have liked to see that, but could not find it. The online tutorial is there however, and worth the price of the book to access. I think this book would be a nice addition to classes in engineering and mathematics, as well as a reference tool. The clarity and brevity of the explanations would complement and reinforce the concepts being taught.
