Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-K-This picture book has a dual purpose. While it is a simple counting rhyme, naming the numbers from 1 to 10, it also attempts to introduce young children to some of the cultural highlights of India. "Engine, engine number FIVE/Soon at Delhi we'll arrive/Engine, engine number SIX/Naughty monkeys playing tricks." The jewel-toned, whimsical illustrations create an upbeat mood. Unfortunately, although readers are ostensibly traveling through the country, there is no sense of geography or a map to indicate where these named places might be. Similarly, when the text mentions "Women wearing bright sari," there is simply an illustration of colorfully dressed women at a market with no further explanation. Counting books abound, and it cannot be said that this one reveals anything meaningful about the culture of India, so only the broadest of collections need consider this unremarkable offering.-Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
