Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Part of the "Enchantment of the World" series, this book has been updated with new text and photographs, according to the publisher. Topics as recent as the 2012 Olympics and 2012 Grammy winners, as well as the latest royal wedding, are evidence of this, although one photo of a farmer on a 1930s tractor shows how even the most diligent updating can go slightly awry. The target audience will not mind, because Blashfield clearly enjoys her subject, and makes reading nonfiction title pleasurable. She even employs a bit of humor, as when she describes Geoffrey of Monmouth, who wrote of England as inhabited by giants, as "England's first science fiction writer." A thorough history of England is interwoven with geography, biology, government, religion, sports, culture, and food. Information in each chapter is presented factually, but in a way that flows as a narrative rather than just a series of facts. The book includes all the hallmarks of research-oriented books for children: table of contents, extensive index, timeline, charts and graphs, a Fast Facts page, and appropriately placed and well-captioned photos and illustrations. Scholastic's website is listed as a further reference, and Blashfield even includes suggestions for related music. An excellent choice for upper elementary and lower middle school students.
