Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
Part of the "Lands, Peoples and Cultures" series, this revised edition explores the island of Great Britain, located off the western coast of Europe. Twelve short chapters discuss its topography, climate, the many immigrants who have settled there over the centuries, various cities, its royal history, and a look at its historical and contemporary industries. Large color photographs and a few illustrations bring the well-written text to life for young readers. A simple map of the island is included but could have been more detailed as many areas discussed in the text are not represented on the map nor does it show any contouring. The final chapters discuss the country's efforts to restore native plants and animals to a more natural level. It is a solid overview for upper elementary students. This revised edition includes updated statistics and new photographs. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
