Children's Literature - Sandra G. Brody
The revised title in "The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures Series," created by Bobbie Kalman, gives the reader a comprehensive overview of England. Full-color photographs on each page enhance and help bring life to the text. Descriptions under the photographs add to the understanding of each topic. Students will learn about England's modern traditions as well as its history from as early as 700 B.C. to the World Wars. Children may be surprised to read that many modern English cities were originally settled by Roman armies who invaded and conquered existing lands. The chapter on modern English history includes a section about the American Revolution and an illustration of the Boston Tea Party. When youngsters read about England's sports, they will learn about "football, rugby, and cricket," and that "football" in England is the same as American soccer. The book includes a Table of Contents, Glossary and Index, which make it an excellent addition to any classroom or school library. Reviewer: Sandra G. Brody
