While recently watching the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical "The King and I", I noticed in the credits that the movie was based on a book. After some further investigation, I discovered this book which relates the true story of Anna Leonowens in the Siamese court during the better part of the 1860's. It was amazing to discover that some of the scenes and dialog from the movie come right out of her book like her first meeting with Siam's Prime Minister where she is informed that the king does not remember promising her a house so she will have to stay at the palace. And, her first interview with the king where he questions her age and she straight-facely answers with "150 years old". It was astonishing to see this strong woman, before the age feminism, standing up to the King and advocating for the poor. Incredibly, she manages to endear herself with the whole royal court from the King to the lowliest slave. There are several free eBook versions that are available thru Barnes and Noble. Unfortunately, they appear to be scanned from published books which lead to numerous typos in the transformation to a digital version. I examined all of the ones available on the site at the time; this one appears to the best eBook version.

This is an OCR scanned book, in which there are so many uncorrected errors that it is nearly impossible to read. Subtitles are misplaced in the middle of a paragraph, spaces in the middle of words, and misread scanned characters too numerous to count. Its so difficult to figure out what the text should read that you can barely keep in mind the context of the sentence. If you are truly interested in this story, buy a hardcopy. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

If you enjoyed Anna and the King, or The King and I, this is a wonderful book for you. I recently read it when writing a report on Thailand during the 19th century. Wow, this was not only a great resource but a captivating read. I hope you all enjoy this as I did.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
