Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
The first volume of English String Miniatures offered a delectable mix of lighter fare, much of it with a strong rural accent. This second installment is equally enjoyable, although the mood is often more serious. Frank Bridge's Sally in Our Alley has a distinct folk flavor as well as a wistful air, while Elgar's Sospiri is a dark, lyrical lament. All told, there is more variety here: the athletic virtuosity of Haydn Wood's Fantasy-Concerto (with its echoes of Elgar's Introduction and Allegro) contrasting with the sinuous grace of Delius's Air and Dance, and the unpretentious, rustic charm of Vaughan Williams's Charterhouse Suite. All told, there is more variety here: the athletic virtuosity of Haydn Wood's Fantasy-Concerto (with its echoes of Elgar's Introduction and Allegro) contrasting with the sinuous grace of Delius's Air and Dance, and the unpretentious, rustic charm of Vaughan Williams's Charterhouse Suite. The performances are affectionate, despite a few signs of strain in the more vigorous passages of Wood's work, and the recorded sound is warmly atmospheric. Both this disc and its winsome predecessor are not to be missed.
