Overview

What begins as a holiday trip for amateur sleuth and cooking aficionado Sadie Hoffmiller and her daughter, Breanna, turns into a bizarre mystery when they discover a dead body in the sitting room of an English manor. Breanna's boyfriend, Liam, is heir to both the family title and the family estate of Southgate, where everyone seems to have a secret . . . or two. When the body in the sitting room disappears, Sadie and Breanna are stranded at the estate until the police can clear them to leave. With their departure delayed, they might as well solve the murder. Armed with a jogging whistle, her personal recipe collection, and an unfailing sense of American justice, Sadie begins her own investigation to find the killer. But as Sadie uncovers layer after layer of misdirection, secrets, and outright lies, she wonders if anyone is telling the truth or if the case is really as hopeless as it appears to be. Take a missing family history, toss in a secret romance, mix with a mysterious murder, and this is one vacation Sadie will never forget.

    Innocents abroad ;)

English Trifle is the second of the Sadie Hoffmiller mysteries, but since I won a copy of it, I got to read it first. I found English Trifle completely absorbing! I devoured this book. (I know, I know, very punny.)

But seriously, I loved the twists and turns in the plot, very few of which I saw coming. And it's always fun to romp in the English countryside.

As always, Sadie's a bit on the preachy side, though I found her less so in this book than in Lemon Tart.

And the recipes look wonderful! I made the eponymous trifle for my husband (he lived in Scotland for a few years and had fond memories of that dish). He loved it!

    Great Read

The next installment in Sadie's mystery series, after Lemon Tart, is English Trifle. And I liked it better than the first. This time Sadie and her daughter are in England and find a body over tea. Full of clever dialogue, compelling characters and solid mystery, English Trifle is one of the best books I've read in a while.

    Good Mystery, Annoying Main Character

This is the second Sadie book I have read. Like in Lemon Tart, I enjoyed the well written mystery and loved the recipes, but Sadie seriously gets on my nerves. She is a busybody to the nth degree who fully believes she knows better than everyone else on every single topic. I found myself wanting her to get a smack down and be put in her place multiple times throughout the books. With a character like this you either need to be able to love them or love to hate them.....not find them so annoying that you don't want to continue reading. I much prefer the Hannah Swenson series by Jo Anne Fluke

    A Reader's Delight

English Trifle was a reader's delight! It was so enjoyable that as I read the book I had to tell my husband the story all the way along! I love all of Josi Kilpack's books, but this one was especially fun! Full of mystery and suspense without any gore. The reader is given just enough clues to not shock us when we find out "who did it", but not enough to give it away too early either. I can't wait to read Devil's Food Cake!

    Charming

This is one of the best mysteries I have read in quite some time. It goes along the lines of the more classic mysteries where subtle clues are left leading you to the culprit but obvious clues lead you to suspect the incorrect person. It is charming and witty, the heroine is not your run of the mill middle 20's woman, Sadie is a recipe loving widow with a 20 something daughter. One of my favorite parts of the book was the recipes. The Lemon tart from the first book was heavenly!
