In the more than two decades since its original publication,Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn has become the classicreference for understanding adult motivation in educational andtraining settings. It has remained a work of enduring value to bothpractitioners and students of adult learning.

New to this edition is the blending of a neuro-scientificunderstanding of motivation and learning with an instructionalapproach responsive to linguistically and culturally differentadult learners. Based on the most current educational andbiological research, Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn addressesissues that focus on deepening learner motivation and helpingadults to want to learn. In the book, Raymond J. Wlodkowski offersa clear framework and sixty practical, research-based strategiesthat are designed to elicit and encourage learner motivation. Inaddition, the book is filled with practical examples, guidelinesfor instructional planning, and cutting-edge ideas for assessmentand transfer of learning.

The book explores the conditions that evoke student motivationand shows the ways in which teachers of adults can create learningenvironments that stimulate and nourish the desire to learn.Wlodkowski illuminates the characteristics of a motivatinginstructor—expertise, compassion, enthusiasm, culturalresponsiveness, and clarity. He also analyzes four major motivatingfactors—inclusion, attitude, meaning, and competence—andprovides suggestions on how to employ them during the instructionalprocess. And to meet the demands of today's adult population,Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn offers information oneffectively teaching diverse students including low-income andEnglish language learners.

Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn takes an interdisciplinaryperspective, not only drawing on research from adult developmentand education but from fields that include cultural and ethnicstudies, the biological and neuropsychological sciences, psychology, and literature. As in the previous edition, the ideasand methods advocated in this book are generally applicable toonline learning as well as conventional classroom settings.

Editorial Reviews

A resource for teachers, trainers, and others who want to be a motivating influence on adults as learners. Wlodkowski (Regis U., Denver) points out that all motivation must come from within learners but explores factors that trigger it and ways teachers can stimulate and nourish it. The second edition is revised from the first, published over a decade since, with a motivational framework more responsive to the influence of race, ethnicity, gender, and class on adult learning. Recommended -- good information

This book was a required textbook for my Master's level class in Adult Education. As an educator at an adult basic education program, it is truly a find. It offers great direction and over 55 strategies for teachers of any level of adult education for motivating your students and/or competing with all the issues of life that a non-traditional aged student (from 24-70+) brings to the learning environment in order to keep them engaged and coming back.
