Enigmas of the Athenian Democracy
Influenced by the abundance of sources and the vividness of the descriptions, many have the impression that we know everything about the daily functioning of the Athenian Republic. I had the same impression, ever since I was a student. Only much later did I discover with amazement how fragmentary the information we have is and how many questions remain unanswered. This is why this book was created. It does not have the ambition to offer yet another comprehensive description of the Athenian Republic. It has a much more specific goal: to explore only a few aspects of it that seem enigmatic when seen from a broader comparative perspective. One is the silent disappearance of hereditary monarchy. Another is the lack of naturalization of the metics who fulfilled the same military obligations as the natural citizens. Was Attica too large for direct democracy? Why was the required quorum of the Ekklesia of Athens set at only 6,000 citizens and only for decisions concerning individual cases? How exactly were the deputies and other officials drawn? The election of generals? Were there political parties? The book aspires to identify and highlight such "enigmas", even if it cannot solve them.
