Overview

Back when Enrique Iglesias was trying to make it in the biz, he sang under the name Enrique Martinez so as not to be accused of riding the coattails of his famous father, Julio. Today, those worries are well behind him. Iglesias is one of the most successful recording artists in Latin America and, after reaching No. 1 on the U.S. charts with his WILD WILD WEST soundtrack ballad "Bailamos," a rising star north of the pop border as well. On his first English-language album he's joined by Whitney Houston on the soft, elegant "Could I Have This Kiss Forever," setting the tone for a disc geared to satisfy fans of his father and the Backstreet Boys alike. Not as interested in livin' la vida loca as his top competitor, Ricky Martin, Enrique finesses a romantic, folk-inflected lite rock that often suggests Chris Isaak at his most elegiac. The reprised "Bailamos" and the album's first single, "Rhythm Divine," aren't tailored to move bodies so much as melt hearts, which they obviously will. Still, whether Enrique is covering Bruce Springsteen's "Sad Eyes," mixing spindly Latin rhythms with lush, florid melodies on the genteel "I'm Your Man," or throwing a little salsafied fun into "Alabao," he seems set on coming from behind to reign as the king of the Latin pop explosion. And ENRIQUE suggests he may even be more than that.

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Enrique Iglesias' Interscope debut Enrique was designed to be a massive crossover success, breaking him to the pop audience that devoured Ricky Martin and "Livin' la Vida Loca." So, the Latin roots were pushed to the background and the record leaned heavily on mainstream dance-pop and adult contemporary ballads. Iglesias and Andres Restrepo served as executive producers, overseeing a number of producers whose work all sounds fairly cohesive. That may be because each specialized in a certain area: dancefloor numbers or slow-burners. It's all impeccably crafted and appealing, the way a big-budget record like this should be. Song wise, there are a couple of stretches that are a little rote but not unappealing, and for the most part, the tunes are endearing; as a matter of fact, the first breakthrough hit, "Bailamos," pales in comparison with much of the first half of the album, including "Rhythm Divine," "I Have Always Loved You," and "Oyeme." If Enrique doesn't pack a knock-out punch, it's because it wasn't structured that way. It was made to be a sturdy and satisfying mainstream crossover effort, and that's exactly what it is.

The "Enrique" cd is absolutely amazing. This is the first Enrique cd that I ever bought. After hearing this I became a full-blown Enrique fan and have bought all of his wonderful cds. I have been an Enrique fan for close to 4 years now, and I can't imagine how life would be without his wonderful music! Every song on this cd is amazing, especially Bailamos, Rhythm, Divine, and You're My #1. Enrique is the greatest singer on the face of this earth and everyone should buy his cds!!!!!

enrique is HOT HOT HOT, but....... his cd could use a little work. this is a good cd--- all the songs have wonderful lyrics and he has a beautiful voice. however, the cd starts to get a little boring after the first couple of songs. I wouldnt reccomend this cd to anyone who dosent like slow songs.

I just have to say that this CD is great-when I heard Enrique was coming out with an English album, I was estatic! I loved his Spanish ones, even though I couldn't understand every word-the melodies were super..he is the best of the Latin music, by far. I might wear out this CD, I've been playing it constantly since I bought it!

I have been an Enrique fan since the first album came out and I've loved them all. This one is great though, being that it is his first English album. He is so talented and just because he can't dance doesn't mean that he isn't a great artist. He may never out sell his father, but he'll always be the greatest artist in the world to me. English or Spanish, I love them all, so keep pumping them out Enrique.

This is my 3rd cd by Enrique (I have Cosas del Amor, and Vivir), and this is my favorite so far. The lyrics are just gorgeous. Whenever I listen to them or read them I almost start crying they're so sweet. And you have the up-tempo dance songs like Bailamos and Rhythm Divine, but my favorites are I'm Your Man, I have always loved you, and You're my #1. Basically, this is just an awesome collection. Go buy it, you won't regret it.

I not used to hearing him sining in english but I think that his C.D. has a lot of good to it. He's a great singer and to think I couldn't stand the sound of his voice 4 years ago!!! I guess things change.
