Overview

Elizabeth Angier was happy to be at the end of the school year. She thought her summer on the family farm would be full of work and play with her best friend, Rachel, and her other best friend, her dog, Maizey. However, Elizabeth didn’t anticipate the Harmony Farms Corporation moving to her town. Her world starts to crumble as her best friend moves away and her parents whisper of farmers selling their land and the effects this factory farm operation could have on them.

When she thinks things can’t get much worse, she meets the most unusual creature, Gaia, the living entity of the Earth. Strange things begin to happen to her, around her, and through her!

Elizabeth discovers that with these new powers comes responsibility. A dire mistake makes Elizabeth wonder if meeting Gaia has been a blessing or a curse. Will Elizabeth have the strength to fight a large corporation?

Or will her upstate New York home be spoiled by profit driven pork production that fouls the air, land, and water?

The Gaia Girls Series: What would you do if you could hear the Earth asking for help? In the Gaia Girls book series, that is what happens to four girls, each from a different region of the world. They are approached by Gaia, the living organism of the Earth. Each is endowed with powers over one of the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. They must learn to use their powers to help Gaia survive the effects of modern humanity. Visit www.gaiagirls.com for more information.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Ten-year-old Elizabeth who lives on an increasingly embattled family farm, takes on corporate power and the factory farm establishment in this frankly didactic first book in a planned series. Humans are destroying the environment, cluttering the countryside of upstate New York with "castle houses." The kids who live in them do not take the bus to school but instead get dropped off in huge SUVs with leather-covered seats. If all this sounds familiar, that is intentional. Elizabeth's bucking of this system is so sympathetically conveyed that it earned this book a National Outdoor Book Award (NOBA). It is in the fantasy leap this book takes that Welles is both ambitious and effective. In small ways at first, then more and more clearly, the earth begins to speak to Elizabeth in the person of a river otter. She has been chosen, along with three other girls, to save Gaia. Soon she begins to develop the powers she will need in her inevitable confrontation, at levels both deeply personal and universal, with the "dark side." Despite prose that occasionally plods across this far-reaching stage, the weaving of the story into the everyday life of the child protagonist saves it from heavy handedness. That life is peopled with a bully, victims, friends, allies, and antagonists. Elizabeth's part-American Indian ancestry seems contrived, too obviously conflating complexities of ancestry and identity. The backbone of this story lies in passages given to the otter, in which she laments the damage done to the only earth we have—these carry the strength of the book's rationale, and they work. So do the machinations of Harmony Farms, whose business practices and collusions with local government arecrystal clear reflections of present-day reality. Hidden codes encourage rereading, as do Ann Hameister's delicately inked black-and-white illustrations. Jacket copy informs us that each of the four girls in the series will be from a different region of the world. It is to be hoped that cultural generalizations about those regions will not derail this worthy intention. The accompanying audio CD track is reminiscent of 1980s children's cult hits Raffi Meets Magpie for the middle grades. Printed appropriately on 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

    A reviewer

Thank you thank you thank you to the author, illustrator and publishers of this book!!! My daughter is 10 years old and absolutely loves it. She loves to read but can be very picky about books! We happened to be at the Boston Museum of Science when the author was there and my daughter had to have a signed copy after talking to Lee Welles for a few minutes. We are very eco-concerned and I am glad to see a book that really relates to this generations problems and the fact that they really do need to start getting involved and getting there friends involved in fixing the situation NOW!!! SO again THANK YOU!!! I truly believe that this book may help a lot of young adults step up and make a difference!

    Magic

I can recall reading books like Gaia Girls as a kid. It's one of those that really stimulates the imagination and will draw a kid into a magical world complete with talking otters. And it was great fun to read as an adult! Yes, it has an environmental bent, but not the slightest bit preachy it's simply about a girl who has great love for her farm and wants to save it from changing.

A Must Environmental Book for Kids

This book is about a pre-adolescent girl of Native American ancestory who discovers she has a very special relationship with Gaia (Mother Earth). She lives on a farm in a farming community that is under threat from a big company that proclaims to be for the environment, but is not. There is no profanity or violence in this book. Read to find out how this fourth grade girl and her dog help her family and neighbors.
