This brief overview of the world of Entertainment Media will be primarily helpful as a background or historic look at the subject. Because of the extremely rapid pace of change in technology today, the "current information" is already dated. However, students will probably find the historic information new, interesting and almost unbelievable. Topics introduced include violence and sex in entertainment, representation and stereotypes, cost, and piracy. The volume includes an index, bibliography, web addresses and many good color illustrations. It begins with a short history of entertainment media (radio, recorded music, movies, television, etc.) and segues into the ever-changing technology of today. Information on the entertainment market, violence & sex and their impact on our society (Columbine). The book also delves into the dangers of stereotypes, positive role models, and pursuing diversity. The chapter on Stealing Entertainment brings out the types of stealing (peer-to-peer, cracked files, filming in a movie theater, etc.) and the cost of piracy. Intellectual property is given a brief, but pithy description. The last chapter looks at the future.
