Children's Literature - Heather Kinard
At some point, every child begins to imagine the future and what she or he might want to be when grown up. A simple hobby like playing a musical instrument, singing in a choir, acting in a school play, or even listening to music on an iPod could lead to a very exciting career. This book examines the different opportunities available in the rapidly expanding entertainment industry. Readers take a look at a typical day in the life of an actor, director, musician, and conductor. What are the work environments like, average salaries, and educational requirements needed for each particular job? Included are evaluations of the potential market of each profession and how to go about finding work. Helpful questions are included throughout the book to help the reader assess if their personality is a good fit for this line of work. Photographs and real-life examples help make this an engaging and interesting read. A list of additional resources, an index, and glossary are also included in the back of the book. Part of the "Inside the Industry" series. Reviewer: Heather Kinard

Gr 5–8—These two well-designed books describe a variety of careers in these popular fields. Because they help readers assess if these positions are suitable for their personality types and backgrounds, the titles are good choices for career exploration and self-discovery. They are also useful for research and reports. The nine chapters each provide answers to a specific question, such as "Is an entertainment job for you?" Sidebars and full-color photos appear throughout. Following sections furnish career information in different formats. "The Get Your Foot in the Door" sections offer tips for gaining experience and networking. A listing of professional organizations' websites and a "Market Facts" chart that cites the numbers of jobs, growth rate, median wage, and related jobs and skills, are appended. Because this type of information is usually not contained in one source and is challenging to find by other means, these two volumes are solid additions.—Caroline Geck, Newark Public Schools, NJ
