    Is This the One?

Is this the book that tells us that one of the all time 100 greatest stars is Sylvester Stallone & then the photograph they show us hides practically his entire face in a scene from ROCKY inside the ring?!?!??? Appalling!! The man's face & body are indelibly marked in the minds of MILLIONS of people & this book has the gaul to not even show it??!!? Come on! SOMEBODY involved in the publishing of that book doesn't like Sly. Overall, the usual greats are included - Bogie, Turner, Kelly, Lancaster, West - so I enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

    So It's Not Perfect. . . That's Perfect!

No 'Best of' compilation ever lives up to its billing. Why? Because nobody's personal 'best of' list is the same. The most such a compilation can hope for is to get the big ones right and make good arguments for the rest. If it challenges its critics to come up with a better list, all the better. EW's Top 100 Stars does just this. My roommate, who knows nothing about movies, guessed seven out of the top ten, and his misses were all in the top 25. So the book has the GREAT ONES covered. It also has some controversial ones, and some downright ridiculous ones thrown in for fun. But that's their list. The fun comes when you challenge it with your own: 'Why is Wayne ahead of Brando?' 'Where is Joan Fontaine?' 'Arnold and Sly, why?' and of course, 'Can this list be right-Grace Kelly not number one?' Interesting, stimulating, and for the most part pretty accurate, this book is a must read for any buff of the entire motion picture era.

    NO SENSE OF HISTORY

Its unfortunate that with the spate of *end of the century/millenium* books that are being released there is no sense of perspective or history. Everything is geared to how we see it now. The fact that Sharon Stone is even mentioned in the book is proof of that. But its the prdominant mentality of *if I havent personally experienced something it cant be important* If anyone who is writing a book like this would take the time and do a little research then maybe it would be worth reading. The fact is they just want to appeal to the current generation, so they overlook people who were really *stars* in the true sense of the word in favor of current popular *celebrities*, most of whom which will enter the Ryan O neal/Ali Mcgraw home for forgotten *stars* in about 10 years.

Without Shirley Maclaine it was just not accurate.

A beautiful trip through some of Hollywoods greatest thespians. I looked from front to back to see my favorite lady of the screen but alas I kept bumping over the pages left to Sharon Stone whos greatest moment on screen was an open view of her privates to leering, drooling detectives. If Shirley Maclaine isn't one of the top one hundred, someones not been to the movies over the last 40 years. Comedy to pathos I have enjoyed each and every one. Thank you Shirley from my heart for all the times you have made me laugh and cry and wish upon that star.

    Is there no justice?

Marilyn Monroe over Audrey Hepburn? I guess this book rates a star by popularity and schmaltz rather than talent and grace - at least for actresses. If all you have to do to be one of the greatest stars is show some cleavage and giggle, I'd like to discontinue my SAG membership, please.

    Great, but...

Why is Bogie #1? Marlon Brando shaped acting in Hollywood, and without him, it would probably still be subpar.-ie Humphrey Bogart.

    What about Lucille Ball?!

I found some acters and actress who should of been in this book, one that I thought would for sure be in here was Lucille Ball! I might of missed her, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't. She had the most greatest show that millions loved and millions still do love. I fell that LUCILLE BALL should be included in the top 100 greatest movie stars of all time!
