The second edition of this text, published in 1992, was arguably the most comprehensive tome in the field of occupational medicine. This third edition features more chapters with additional sections on ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorders, managed care, biochemical mechanisms of disease, environmental topics, and such special topics as multiple chemical sensitivities, HIV, TB, and endocrine disorders. The editor maintains the leading edge in the field. This third edition has been published to cover the explosion of knowledge in environmental and occupational medicine and toxicology. Increased concern about the environment also mandates its publication at this time. It is written for occupational medicine practitioners, residents, students, and public health practitioners. It gives depth and breadth on each topic that could be used to prepare a lecture and to gain background reading when embarking on a new area of research. It should be included in every reference library's collection. Schematics and tables are quite helpful. Text is dense and there are few illustrations. The table of contents is adequately descriptive and the index helpful. Bibliographies are extensive in most chapters, ranging from 50 to upward of 300 of the most current and salient articles in each area. This is the finest and most comprehensive book in the field. It gives extensive background, including excellent descriptions of disease mechanisms and critical reviews of the literature.
