The text is written as a chronological narrative. Each chapter documents a specific period of time, and within each chapter particular aspects of the environment are presented, such as the atmosphere, woods and forests, agriculture, rural settlement, urban settlement, sacred spaces. The text is illustrated with 50 photographs and approximately 60 maps and diagrams specially prepared for this book. The treatment is academic, but accessible to the general reader.
