Overview

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine combines four essential topics in one text - epidemiology, biostatistics, preventive medicine, and public health. Nowhere else can you find all of these vital subjects covered in a single, reasonably priced source. The Epidemiology section examines epidemiology as the basic science of preventive medicine and public health - with information on human ecology, infectious disease epidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology, and clinical epidemiology. The Biostatistics section starts with clinical biostatistics, presenting methods for evaluating clinical tests and improving clinical decisions. It then covers the major biostatistical concepts and methods used in medical research. Finally, it addresses special topics such as random allocation, sample size determination, use of life table methods, elementary applied probability analysis, decision analysis, and the use of nonparametric tests for ordinal data. The Preventive Medicine and Public Health section examines the options available to physicians and communities for promoting health and preventing disease. After it discusses the roles of local, state, and federal governments in promoting health, it outlines the U.S. health promotion and disease prevention goals for the year 2000. It concludes with a look at the current strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. medical care system and a cost analysis of the economics of prevention.

The book contains both black-and-white and two-color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bernard J. Turnock, MD, MPH (University of Illinois at Chicago)
Description: Basic concepts from the public health sciences and preventive medicine are often taught to medical students during their first two years of medical school. This book is written to serve as a review text, and presents its material simply and straightforwardly.
Purpose: The topics include epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, occupational health, and preventive medicine, which are combined into courses that are often taught without benefit of a single textbook.
Audience: This book was designed to fill that gap and to serve as both a text and resource for medical and certain other students. The book's authors are highly credible experts in the field and orchestrate a useful overview of the major topics covered.
Features: Tables, charts, and graphs are well presented. Several very useful summaries of clinical preventive services are included. Other internal features of the book are largely unremarkable; the book is well packaged.
Assessment: This fills an important need and niche in presenting a summary of the basic public health sciences and preventive medicine. It is especially useful for medical students, but graduate physicians preparing for licensing and board exams will also value this book. It is a volume that is recommended for most health science libraries because of its versatility. It can stand alone as a review of these topics, or it can serve as a text and reference for students.
