More About This Textbook

Overview

Epidemiology of Chronic Disease: Global Perspectives presents the most up-to-date information on the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors and preventive factors of common chronic diseases. Special sections of each chapter focus on controversial topics in the epidemiology of each disease that facilitates active discussion of molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and the relevant epidemiologic issues pertaining to the prevention and control of chronic diseases.

Covering epidemiology of all major chronic diseases ranked in the top twenty causes of death globally, as well as selected minor conditions that significantly afflict the human population, this comprehensive text provides readers with an excellent basis for examining current hypotheses regarding chronic disease epidemiology.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Cheryl Bowers-Stephens, M.D.(Ochsner Health System)
Description: The author has extensively researched and comprehensively presented the current ideas and controversies surrounding the core competencies in the epidemiology of chronic diseases. This is a must have book for both instructors of epidemiology and students in the field.
Purpose: The purpose is to present comprehensive, current information on key areas of common chronic diseases, including the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, and preventive factors. Given the increasingly dynamic nature of research and discoveries in chronic diseases, there is a need for up-to-date information on pertinent issues surrounding their etiology and prevention.
Audience: The audience includes students and teachers in the health sciences, particularly those in epidemiology, public health, and medicine.
Features: The book presents the material in a concise, clear, and logic manner and covers the major chronic diseases in addition to the recent infectious diseases considered by the experts in the field to mimic chronic disease and are ubiquitous around the world. The author employs high-quality standards in presenting the material. He injects global perspectives and presentations of current research with useful illustrations. However, the author should incorporate interval estimation when measures of association are presented. For example, on page 364, the author presents some odds ratios, but without p-value or 95% confidence interval. These are important to the professional audience, which would like to cite whether or not measures of association are statistically significant. Furthermore, I would personally like to see the author discussing or including the XDR-TB issue in Eastern Europe. For example, Latvia was reported to have 19% of MDR-TB to be XDR in 2006 (MMWR 2006; 55(11): 301-328).
Assessment: This book is excellent, exceptionally scientific, innovatively written, and encyclopedic in nature. It is a must for practitioners and academicians in the field of epidemiology, medicine, and other allied health sciences.
