Description: The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) is the national standardized test for psychology licensure. This book is a primer for the test. The first edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide a review supporting study for this test.
Audience: The audience is clinical psychology students preparing for the EPPP. It is written at an appropriate level. Most of the contributors to this edition are psychologists, compared to the previous edition, with had many student authors.
Features: Each chapter covers a major section of the EPPP. The structure of the EPPP has changed and the book continues with a chapter on each of the major areas covered by the test. Whereas my review of the previous edition noted that it would not work as a standalone study guide given its brevity, this edition now explicitly states that the purpose is to serve as a primer or review supporting traditional study methods. The preface notes there are updates but does not indicate what they are. The review of the first edition pointed out outdated information and, unfortunately that continues to be true in this edition with no apparent updates to some areas (e.g., the book cites a study from 2004 about current test usage that is no longer accurate in 2019). There is little rhyme or reason to the currency of information. For example, the most recent iteration of the MCMI is mentioned (2015), but the MMPI-2-RF is completely omitted even though it's been available for more than a decade and has hundreds of studies completed on it. This occurs in other sections as well. For example, out of 145 references in chapter 2, only one is more current than when the 2014 edition was published. It unclear if this represents an attempt to teach to the test content (which may be outdated as well) or contains oversights in the updates due to the authors' unfamiliarity with certain areas (e.g., the assessment chapter is written by two pediatric-focused neuropsychologists), but it certainly hampers the book's ability to convey current information. Finally, the practice questions are certainly welcome in a book like this, but they are very simplistic with the answers and distractors quite obvious at times; some could be answered by readers without a psychology background based on inferential reasoning. This fails to provide a genuine experience of the difficulty and style of the EPPP questions.
Assessment: Despite some of the shortcomings of this book, it could have worked as a worthwhile review after a core study course or home study with extensive volumes. However, the continued errors and lack of updating, along with practice questions that do not reflect the difficulty and style of the EPPP, make the book problematic and render the second edition impractical.
