The previous edition was published in 2007. Purpose: It is intended as a primer on horse science for people wanting to work with horses (trainers, managers, etc.) and, to a lesser extent, for owners. It provides valuable background information for people with little experience. Audience: The audience is students seeking jobs in the equine industry, and the content is appropriate for this group. Features: Following a brief history, the book details horse anatomy and physiology (and how that relates to the purposes horses are intended for). It also focuses on management issues (general horse care, breeding, healthcare, behavior, and business aspects). At the end of each chapter there is a review and student activity section that can help with understanding and application of the topic. There are helpful appendixes (conversion tables, vaccination schedules, etc.) and a glossary of terms used in the field. The book is a valuable resource for someone who does not have a lot of horse experience; people who come from a horse background may find that they already know most of this. Assessment: This is a great resource for students without an extensive horse background who are interested in the equine industry. It might also be valuable for veterinarians as a tool for owner education. It highlights different aspects and provides useful, detailed, and current information. There is (to my knowledge) no other book that provides this information in one volume. The new edition features updated information and data and now also offers information on zoonoses, proteomics and nutrigenomics, sexed semen, green buildings, safety, horse theft, equitation competitions, therapeutic riding, information literacy, and personal qualities.
Dr. Parker is the director for AgrowKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. The former division director at the College of Southern Idaho, he worked in agriculture, information technology, drafting, and electronics, and taught computer, agriculture, and writing classes. He is the 2008 recipient of the N.A.C.T.A. (National American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture) Distinguished Educator Award, and the 2010 recipient of the N.A.C.T.A. Murray Brown Leadership Award. Dr. Parker has authored several Delmar,Cengage textbooks (Plant & Soil Science, Aquaculture Science, Introduction to Plant Science, and Introduction to Food Science, and others), and serves as Editor of the N.A.C.T.A. Journal. He earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, a Ph.D. in Reproductive Physiology from Iowa State University, and completed post-doctoral work at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, and the University of Wyoming, Laramie.
