Editorial Reviews

Steven K. Hamick
This book is designed to teach the respiratory care student concepts, principles, selection, and operation of equipment commonly used in the field of respiratory care. This second edition makes readability and a student-centered focus a major priority and uses a comprehensive, competency-based approach to describe the equipment employed in the practice of respiratory care. Intended primarily for students of respiratory care, this book would be a valuable reference for seasoned practitioners, physicians, and other others who teach/use this equipment. The author is very solid and credible in this arena. The book is broken down into 10 chapters with various types of equipment pertinent for that chapter. Each chapter contains: an introduction, list of objectives, assembly and troubleshooting section, voluminous pictures, schematics, algorithms, flow charts, and diagrams for text clarification/demonstration, and a 30-question self-assessment quiz at the end of each chapter to assure mastery of material. A selected bibliography containing practical and current sources concludes each chapter. A glossary of terms located in the back of the book will aid students in recalling various terms found within the text. This is an excellent book for the student of respiratory care. It neatly blends the theories and engineering principles employed in equipment operation and links them to appropriate equipment selection, application, assembly, and troubleshooting. Due to the continually changing technology often found in respiratory care equipment, this text fulfills the needs of a textbook that not only contains non-technical equipment but the latest advancements in technological and diagnosticequipment as well. It is also a recommended reference for respiratory care departments and medical school libraries as well.
