I Also Recommend:
I was so excited to read that Halt is in this entire book! I missed him so much in books five and six. Actually Erak's Ransom takes place after book four The Battle for Skandia and before book five The Sorcerer of the North. Will is still apprenticed to Halt and soon to graduate and become a Ranger himself. This is what makes this books so outstanding.
The story begins with Evanlyn who is really Princess Cassandra, daughter of King Duncan. She wants more freedom making decisions for the kingdom. Then we discover that Halt has proposed to Lady Pauline and they are soon to be married. Lady Pauline's guest list is so funny. You can imagine that Halt is not happy with a big wedding. Pauline has created a "Bores Table" for certain wedding guests. That turned out not only to be a clever idea but quite funny.
During the wedding ceremony, one of Erak's men, Svengal, suddenly shows up. Will and Horace intervene to find out what he wants so Halt and Pauline can enjoy their wedding day. Svengal tells them that Erak's been kidnapped by a desert tribe called the Arridi. Erak is the Oberjarl or king of the Skandian people. The Arridans will release Erak for a ransom. However, Erak tells Svengal to go to Araluen and ask King Duncan to pay his ransom since Skandia is so far away. Svengal does as he is told and the fun begins.
Princess Cassandra who uses the name, Evanlyn, for her protection goes with Halt, Will, Horace, Gilan, and Svengal to Arridi to pay the ransom. Evanlyn will represent Araluen as the crown princess. It is she who will negotiate Erak's ransom with Halt as her advisor with the Arridi leader. Needless to say many things start to go wrong. Erak's is taken into the interior of the desert only to be kidnapped by another tribe of people. So Halt, Will, Horace, Gilan, and Svengal have to cross the desert to find him.
Will doubts his abilities and worries if he is ready to become a Ranger without his mentor. Halt still sees Will as a boy and is afraid to let him go. Evanlyn wants to make adult decisions so she can one day be a good queen. It is Horace and Gilan who are comfortable with who they are and help their friends.
The story has a traitor, several desert tribes, the heat is grueling, sandstorms, and a horse race that will equal Walter Farley's Black Stallion book series. However, the best thing about the book is that Halt is in the whole story. He is back with his wit, charm, good advice helping all the young ones, and makes the story come alive that I enjoyed in the first four books. The ending is the most exciting in the series.
I truly like Will and the other characters in this series, but it is Halt who makes the stories so exciting and fun. I think Flanagan let Will become a Ranger too soon. I would have liked to have read more adventures of Halt as the mentor and Will as his apprentice. Mr. Flanagan please make sure that Halt is in book 8. I don't want to be disappointed.

It jumps back a tad from book 6 for the reason that there is a year or two that are missed between books 5 and 6. This book focuses on Will's transformation from apprentice to a true ranger. He doesn't believe that he is ready for this big step and not ready to leave Halt. Through the book he learns that while he may still have things to learn he can do just fine on his own.
The characters in this book are just as vibrant as in the rest of the books. I picked this book up in the airport because I knew the other six books were awesome... I was not disappointed!

It has suspense, action, wit, and my favorite part, different points of view so you can see the story from multiple perspectives. I really liked this book and you will too, though I recommend you read books 1-6 first, or this one could be a little tough to understand, as it references the other books

As pointed out by the author this take place between books 4 and 5 abd tells the story of his graduation. A smaller story but good none the less. Since I read books 5 & 6 already I knew everyone would come out ok but still a nice tale.

Overview
In the wake of Araluen's uneasy truce with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a dangerous desert tribe. The Rangers - and Will - are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a strange land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the unrelenting heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another. Like a desert mirage, nothing is as it seems. Yet one thing is constant: the bravery of the Rangers.Bringing together many favorite characters ...
