Early in the nineteenth century, immigrants to the U.S. found land scarce along the eastern seaboard. They longed for the good farm land they heard was available west of the Appalachians, but the journey was so difficult that few settlers were able to reach the plains with enough worldly goods to begin farming. The idea of a canal that would run from the Hudson River to Lake Erie gained support from prospective pioneers as well as from the merchants who hoped to outfit and then trade with them. When President Jefferson refused to support such an expensive proposal, DeWitt Clinton persuaded New York to go it alone. It was an almost whimsical venture. None of the planners or contractors had previous experience building a canal. The center section was built first. Valleys were crossed by aqueducts, and cliffs were climbed by "staircase" locks. This book reflects that whimsy in softly colored engravings, maps, and paintings and in the use of several colors on the initial page of each chapter. There is enough information to satisfy a middle-grade reader doing a report and enough charm to attract a browser "just lookin' for somethin' to read."
