Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Lissome watercolors--similar to Donald Carrick's, but softer--illustrate this story of a lonely boy who finds friendship from an unusual source. Because his parents and older brother work, Erik is often on his own. When his brother Matt brings home a baby squirrel, Erik names him Jim-Jim and the two become inseparable. But the day is coming when Erik and his family will live in a place where there will be many children, and in the meantime, Jim-Jim is getting bigger and will soon need to be set free. Erik arrives at that decision himself; that he will go on to make friends is not spelled out, yet the tone of this book is both soothing and confident in its outlook. Wikland's crowd scenes--a marketplace, children on a playground, a busy store--are marvels of watercolor finesse. Like the text, the details are merely suggested, enhancing the wistful mood of the book. Ages 3-up. (Apr.)

K-Gr 2-- A disjointed account of a boy keeping a squirrel for a pet until it grows up. Erik lives in a city apartment with his parents but, with no playmates around, is lonely. One day, an adult friend, Matt, gives Erik a baby squirrel as a pet. He takes ``Jim-Jim,'' the squirrel, everywhere in the city. When Jim-Jim is left alone one day, he tears the apartment apart, and Erik's parents tell him the squirrel, now old enough to look after itself, wants its freedom. After a bit of thinking, Erik frees Jim-Jim in the park. This is a dated, emotionless picture book originally published in Sweden in 1967. Readers are shown little of the feelings a lonely boy should have for a pet. The softly colored, fuzzy illustrations are attractive, but one must still wonder why anyone would bother to resurrect this for translation 22 years later. --Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
