Erlkönig: The Art of the Lied

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Kasunic
The German lied isn't just your ordinary song -- the word refers specifically to the setting of a poetic text for solo voice and piano accompaniment, and the form had its heyday in the 19th century, especially in the hands of Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms. As an introduction and overview of lied composition and performance, this compilation succeeds in the best possible ways. First, the 28 selections cover both the greatest hits of the lied such as the title song, Schubert's "Erlkönig" and rarely heard gems such as Brahms's "Der Schied". Representative excerpts from the great song cycles such as Die schöne Müllerin and Dichterliebe are wisely ...

Representative excerpts from the great song cycles such as Die schöne Müllerin and Dichterliebe are wisely included. Second, the singers heard here are, hands down, four of the greatest lied practitioners of the 20th century, all captured at the height of their vocal powers. As the most celebrated partnership in the history of lied performance, the team of baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Gerald Moore performs the first three Schubert selections, including a relentless and engrossing 1970 performance of the title track. Many consider Fritz Wunderlich's golden sound the most glorious German tenor voice of all time. Listening to the unbridled thrill he gives to the refrain of "Ungeduld" confirms such a claim: The easy, clarion carry of this voice in its upper reaches is matchless. Noted for both an unfailing vocal technique and a profound devotion to the poetic text, Christa Ludwig's characterizations of "death" and the "girl" in Schubert's "Der Tod und das Mädchen" are the finest, most convincingly drawn on record. Jessye Norman was the perfect choice for the Brahms selections. As with everything she sings, she brings a wealth of sound, beautiful declamation, rhythmic precision, and dramatic commitment to these folk-inspired melodies. Finally, while one may enjoy this disc as an audio recording alone, The Art of the Lied can also be played on a computer. The CD-ROM component offers scrolling musical scores of the pieces, interactive MIDI capabilities enabling you to create your own edition of the score, historical and biographical information, and a picture gallery -- all which will serve to enhance one's enjoyment and knowledge of this repertory.
