If you've ever wondered about the glue that hold's the so-called 'new' left together, this is the book for you. Herbert Marcuse's innovative use of Marx's 'Surplus Value Theory' to de-construct Freud's psycho-analytic theories performs feats nothing short of miraculous to successfully breath new life into a failing idealogy. In so doing, Marcuse constructs new Nietzschean 'Tables of Values' where all things 'western' are attempts to dominate and repress our natural animal pleasure seeking instincts (Eros - ID - good) and we are being un-consciously controlled by an evil civilization building and environment destroying 'Death Instinct (Thanatos - bad) resident in the human Super-Ego. This un-conscious evil must be rooted out by destroying the traditional nuclear family, liberating women, redistributing erogenous zones, and breaking the destructive 'Oedipal Cycle' of sexual development. And so the emminent liberal philosopher Isaiah Berlin's concept of 'negative liberty' gets turned on its' head, and justification for imposing 'positive liberty' bursts forth. We must 'choose for other's' in constructing a new 'pleasure loving' society, for society's members are unaware of the repressive unconscious chains that exist in their socially constructed Super-Ego's (although we must ignore the self-same unconscious pleasure loving chains driving mankind from the darkest regions of the ID). False labels and artifically constructed political categories abound in this psycho-analytic thriller. Freud rolls in his grave. Marx breath's new life. And the 60's flower children have a new philosopher to trumpet and justify's the crimes of their mis-spent and wasted youth. A must read for the modern 'progressive' seeking nirvana. A must read for the modern 'conservative' seeking 'reason'.
