Erotica [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
While it didn't set the charts on fire like her previous albums, the ambitious Erotica contains some of Madonna's best and most accomplished music including the hit singles "Deeper and Deeper" and "Rain", even if it runs a bit long.

    Thief of...My Ears!

This is a highly addictive album! 90% of it as a dance, which is Madonna's forte, so buy a copy! If you're just a so-so fan, this will turn you into HUGE fan! This pop masterpiece is often overshadowed by the controversy of her "Sex" book around the same time and does not get the credit it deserves. This album is a good example that some of the hidden gems are the most glamorous ones. Her versatility in this CD is amazing: a cold sadist in "Erotica", an unhappy, troubled soul in "Bad Girl", a heartbroken lover in "Waiting", not to mention her yearning for acceptance in "Why's It So Hard" and addressing the crisis of AIDS in "In This Life". Some other great tunes on this are "Fever", "Deeper and Deeper", "Thief of Hearts" and particularly "Words", with Madonna co-writing each song except for "Fever".

    Madonna's most underrated

Despite her Sex book charade which completely overshadowed this masterpiece, it's easily her most accomplished lyrically. While just looking at it most would think it would be a soundtrack to that ridiculous book, it's completely the opposite. It's an early housey-techno-dance dance tribute to love AND sex...and often times the repercussions of both. Most of the tracks are cold, but the rest are complex...co-dependence (Bad Girl), AIDS (In This Life), verbal abuse (Words), covet (Thief Of Hearts), homophobia (Why's It So Hard). This is the "old" Madonna, who then was saturated with sex, was destined to make. And she did it with complete intelligence and dignity.

    BUY IT!BUY IT!BUY IT!

I love every song on this album, especially Bye Bye Baby. Erotica has Madonna producing some different sound techniques, but there's some of her classic sounds on here, too. An overall excellent pop album!

    Fever...

Good songs but very peaceful ones. This album has very sensual tracks, such as 'Erotica', 'Fever' and 'Bad Girl'. Madonna has a good voice. Only the backing vocals in some songs are annoying. Why Madonna needs guys singing? She could be better without them.

    Easily one of Madonna's Best

No one gives this album nearly enough credit. Madonna has some really great songs on here (and she admittedly has a few that aren't so great, but they're overshadowed by the better ones), such as "Erotica," "Rain," "Deeper and Deeper," and "Bye Bye Baby." One cannot help but love the song "Where Life Begins," which is all about her longing for some good oral sex-- it's kind of silly and dumb, but it's still really good... can't help but love it for some reason. This is definitely an album that someone who likes Madonna even just a little bit must have. In my opinion, it's much better than Bedtime Stories. The late 1980s and the early 1990s were when Madonna was at her best. Don't miss Erotica.
