Gr 6-12-- Twelve lovely color plates show scenes from past civilizations; ten deliberate errors or anachronisms appear in the wealth of visual detail. Included are scenes from ancient Egypt, an Australian aboriginal hunt, a Zulu wedding, a Sioux encampment, a Norman Christmas, a Viking funeral. The mistakes in a scene by the Nile, for example, are a tape measure, a book, an oak tree, a tractor, a fishing pole, a thermos, and a water hose. Most will be obvious to students, although a few items are either so small or poorly drawn as to be unidentifiable. In general, the illustrations are well executed, and Alles does a good job of including the correct parallels for the misplaced objects. Notes identify each error and describe the correct item. Of limited use in an educational setting, this volume will appeal to browsers--but probably only once. --Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA

This unusual picture book challenges kids to find 10 mistakes or anachronisms in each of 12 full-color paintings that represent scenes from particular periods in Egyptian, aboriginal Australian, Zulu, Sioux, Norman, Inuit, Aztec, Viking, Mogul, Minoan, Chinese, and Inca history. While some of the mistakes are easy for children to spot, others will undoubtedly stump even their parents. For instance, children may realize that an electric drill wouldn't have been used in ancient China, but few will recognize that the nondescript coins on the table are not typical of the Han dynasty. Each double-page spread introduces a culture through a large, panoramic scene full of activity, as well as several paragraphs of introductory text. The book will intrigue a somewhat limited audience--those knowledgeable enough to have a fighting chance of solving the puzzles and still young enough to enjoy that staple of children's magazines, "What's Wrong with This Picture?"
