Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
In this paperback reprint of another superbly crafted installment in their "Mysteries in Our National Parks" series, the mother-daughter duo of Skurzynski and Ferguson send the Landon family (and their lucky readers) to Virgin Islands National Park. There Jack and Ashley's wildlife veterinarian mom is investigating the erosion of the coral reef and attendant threats to the endangered hawksbill turtle. Jack's relief that the family is not accompanied by one of their frequent foster kids evaporates when they meet up with wealthy, confident, 13-year-old Forrest Winthrop IV, who is apparently traveling alone—and traveling into danger. Before long Jack and Ashley are forced into sharing Forrest's secret about his strange bond with the proud native storyteller Cimmaron, debating what if anything they owe to this difficult new friend, who seems to be leading them ever deeper into international intrigue and menace. Skurzynski and Ferguson offer equal parts riveting suspense, wrenching ethical dilemma, sobering environmental message, and fascinating armchair travel. One can't wait to see which national park the Landon family will take us to next. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
