Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In Escape from the Ice, Connie and Peter Roop have captured the drama of Shackleton's 1914 attempt to cross Antarctica. The chronology of the story is clear, and the desperate nature of the situation is evident in this careful retelling. Combined with strong illustrations that portray the extremes of climate and danger central to the story, fascinating photographs from the expedition help developing readers visualize details in the text. Brief quotes from Shackleton's diary add appropriate authenticity without taxing the comprehension of elementary-age children. A more complete map, placed nearer the beginning of the book, would have been helpful. Readers at this level need to be able to locate South Georgia Island and the Weddell Sea as they consider the beginning of the ordeal. Readers who like real-life adventures and need limited text and straightforward language will enjoy this book. Jennifer Armstrong's acclaimed Shipwreck at the Bottom of the Sea and Spirit of Endurance could be companion texts that would offer teachers and students expanded opportunities for immersion in historic photographs and other first-hand accounts of the exploration.
