Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sue Reichard
Jack Stalwart's brother is missing. He disappeared while working as a secret agent for the Global Protection Force four months ago. Jack now works for the GPF and searches for his brother while solving international crimes. In this adventure Jack must stop the deadly allosaurus from terrorizing the citizens of New York City. This clever new series has everything a young reader could ask for in a book. A super-hero main character, plenty of action, lots of technology, and a flying skateboard and dinosaur. All these elements will keep the most reluctant readers on the edge of their seats. Black and white illustrations add interest to the text and short chapters are key for enticing reluctant readers. This series is sure to be a hit for upper elementary and middle school readers. Reviewer: Sue Reichard

Gr 2–4—Global Protection Force secret agent Jack Stalwart is only nine years old, but that doesn't stop him from travelling the world and thwarting evil. In his first adventure (Weinstein Books, 2007) in the series by Elizabeth Singer Hunt, Jack's mission is to investigate the theft of an Allosaurus bone, but he must contend with a new set of problems when he realizes that the pilferer has cloned the dinosaur. Now Jack must stop the raging Allosaurus before it destroys New York City. This story contains some implausible situations that detract from its enjoyment. Even the most forgiving listeners will raise their eyebrows at how the adults in the story kowtow to a young boy. Also, Jack's endless supply of convenient gadgets renders him a sort of lazy hero; he never has to think his way out of danger, because he already has a device to diffuse the situation. These flaws might be forgivable if the narration ratcheted up the story to Jurassic Park-like intensity, but the performance is actually quite bland. Long pauses between sentences make the tale plod along, even as the Allosaurus chases Jack through the city. Also, Jack's British accent comes across only half the time, and comical rather than ferocious dinosaur noises contribute to the overall mediocrity of the presentation. Instead, steer listeners to The 39 Clues series.—Amy Holland, Irondequoit Public Library, Evans Branch, Rochester, NY

Easy Reader for 9 year old

My 9 year old son was struggling to find books that interested him, but at the same time were within his reading ability. Tree house was no longer interesting and Harry Potter was too difficult to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We spent about an hour looking at many chapter books and children's mystery series and stumbled on this great series of books. Harry was hooked! He read the first chapter before we got out of the store and devoured one book after another!! He seems to enjoy the variety of geography, the mystery and can relate to the character as a peer. He will likley complete the entire set by the end of first semester, highly recommended.

Inspired my son to become an avid reader!

My 5-year old son was an early reader but he never chose reading over all else until he discovered Jack Stalwart. These books quickly became an obsession for him -- as soon as each one arrived in the house, he would read it until he finished it. He especially loves the gadgets that Jack uses on his missions. The action is authentic but not violent or scary -- a perfect entry-level spy novel! My only complaint is that there are only 12 -- he's read them all!
