Gr 5-8-Harry Potter fans will love this creative book with its adventure-filled, intriguing plot. Randal, a young boy in training to become a knight, decides he would rather be a wizard. So with some help from Maestro Madoc, he enrolls in La Schola Sorceriae, where he endures many trials and learns many tricks and spells. Readers will cheer Randal on as he successfully overcomes each new challenge and matures both emotionally and intellectually. Especially interesting to students will be Randal's difficulty in learning "la lengua antigua," or the old language, as that is the official language in the curriculum. Originally published in 1990 by Troll Communications, this translation, with its rich vocabulary, is masterfully rendered. This is the first book in a series, so readers may enjoy the continuation of Randal's adventures in a new context every time. This book is recommended for all libraries and bookstores. Paul M.
