Editorial Reviews

Criticas
Catalan author Rodoreda (1908-83) wrote some of the most beloved novels of the post-Spanish Civil War period, including the highly acclaimed La plaza del diamante (The Diamond Plaza, Edhasa, 1999), which was made into a movie in 1981, and the award-winning La calle de las camelias (Camellia Street, Circulo de Lectores, 2002). First published in 1974, this compelling, thought-provoking novel stretches from the early 20th century to the end of the Spanish Civil War. Rodoreda tells the story of Teresa, a beautiful, humble girl who works at a Barcelona fish market and has a child out of wedlock. Hiding her past, Teresa manages to marry a wealthy older man and, later, acquires a rich and elegant second husband who doesn't fulfill her or make her happy. As the years pass, she copes with the ravages of aging and the tragic death of her two grandchildren. Painful reminders of mistakes made, lies told, and even a crime committed burden both Teresa and the other characters in the story. In spare, lyrical prose with insight gained from age and experience, Rodoreda presents an intricate web of interrelated characters and relationships, captivating readers with her vision of the complex nature of the human condition. This reprint includes a prolog by the award-winning Spanish novelist Rosa Montero. Highly recommended for all libraries and bookstores interested in contemporary Catalan literature and the Spanish Civil War.
