Excerpt from Essays on Religious Conceptions

These Essays have been written in a profound, and undoubting, Belief in the Dispensation of Christianity, as given to us in the pages of the Now Testament.

The Belief is neither superficial, nor formal, nor conventional, but based on a lifelong study, not only of tho New Testament, but of the Sacred Books of all other Religions Couceptious of Ancient days, and the Modern Religious Couceptious, which have sprung into existence in this century. In 1894, I published an Essay on the "Ancient Religious Conceptions of the World before the great Anuo Domini," and in 1897 I published an Essay 011 the "Modem Religious Conceptions of the World," not in the usual style of prejudiced abuse, but a dispassionate and impartial description, as of a matter of Abstract Science, where Truth only is sought.

We are taught in Scripture that:

"God so loved the World" (the whole Jl'orltl), "that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever belicvcth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting Life."

And, again, in our prayers we repent the words:

"Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that Thou hast made." (Book of Common Prayer: Collect for Good Friday.)

"We give Thee thanks for Thy goodness and lovingkindness to us, and to all men." (Book of Common Prayer: General Tbanksgiviug.)

How, then, can be justified the gross abuse in the Reports of Missionaries in the Field, of the poor non-Christian races, and their Beliefs, those poor races, who by the Divine Will never had, until this century, the knowledge of Diviue Truth brought home to them by Apostle or Evangelist?
