There were tips on what schools looked for as well as actual essays from students accepted into their respective programs. After reading those essays and understanding what was needed to get into school, I was pumped!. . . It only took a few hours to kick out the initial draft. And a couple of weeks in total to complete my essays after I had gotten started. -- BusinessWeek

I wish I had had this book two years ago when my daughter was going through this process... or I wish she had had it. This excellent source of examples of all kinds of essays that have gotten students into the better colleges and universities may be off-putting for some students who "just" want to get into their state university or into one of the smaller or less well-known schools. Early chapters cover preparation for writing college essays, from understanding who sits on admissions committees to self-assessment for school choices and strong essay topics. Several essay examples include subjects such as goals, childhood, and international experience. In the fifth chapter, "At Last, Write," the student begins the final process. This section is very good; it starts with the outline and structure and goes on to description, narrative, cause and effect, paragraphs, transitions, word choices, sentence length, and endings. The following chapter deals with editing, revising, and getting feedback from others. The last section offers a number of essays and how the committees rated them; what these professionals thought worked, what did not; and how the essays could have been made even better. This guide is an excellent choice for high school or public libraries, and a valuable source for those who teach college preparedness workshops. Parents as well as students will find a wealth of information here, all in a very readable format. Index. Appendix. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12).

Admissions officers tend to have a very emotional, almost romantic, vision of their jobs. They love people, and they love to tell anecdotes about people. They prefer the particular to the general, the specific to the universal, and the anecdote to the abstract (and what reader doesn't?). They are searching for some intangible quality in the applications that no number could ever reveal. They hope to find it in the essay. Never squander the chance to tell them who you are in the essay. It helps them to reassure themselves that the process is human and that what they do for a living matters to another human being.
