Overview

Ayurveda is perhaps one of the most popular "holistic" health practices in the United States. Based on 5,000 years of practice and observation and popularized in part in the works of Deepak Chopra, "ayurveda" translates into "the science of life" and takes into account the spiritual, mental, and physcial aspects of health. After a brief definition of ayurveda and the basic elements, ESSENTIAL AYURVEDA outlines the practical steps any person can take to become healthier.

According to the author, "ayurveda" is a verb. The book is set up with simple suggestions to get readers started on the path to good health. As Shubhra writes, "attack your goal of great health in bite-sized chunks, and you’ll get there without ever overstepping your comfort zone. In concrete terms, to "do" Ayurveda is to make healthy choices in daily life. These choices can be as simple as choosing fresh fruit over a donut, choosing a health magazine over a horror novel, choosing to sleep instead of watching late night television."

Outlining the basic elements of the ancient system of Ayurveda, Shubhra Krishan teaches readers how to recognize their energy and body type, and to use Ayurvedic principles to create a balanced diet and lifestyle for their optimum health. She offers tips and suggestions for finding the best products or for creating your own with her recipes for food, beauty care, and other healthcare items. Illustrations are included.

    Inspiring!

Ayurveda used to be Greek to me until a friend gifted me this book. From the first page onwards, I was totally hooked. The book is truly a great primer to Ayurveda, explaining it in such an easy and convincing manner that even the worst skeptic has to be impressed. I now request for warm water at restaurants and try to wake up 15 minutes earlier than I used to. I eat my salads lightly cooked and don't watch gory movies at bedtime. What a difference these small things have made. I cannot recommend this book enough.

    A truly essential read

'The beauty of this book is that it is so simple. If you ever thought Ayurveda was hard to understand, you'll be pleasantly surprised once you delve into this book. It works because after reading just the first few chapters, you want to actually try out the ayurvedic routine. And the recipes...yum!!'

    Two thumbs up!

I'm one of those who always wanted to know what Ayurveda really, really is but didn't know who to ask. Then I picked up Essential Ayurveda. The greatest thing this book does for you is to tell you how amazingly simple Ayurvedic teaching is. As the author says, "Ayurveda is a verb'. On every page, I found a tip I could follow easily. Besides the recipes, I loved the ideas for playing with herbs and spices. The chapter on living the ayurvedic routine was so inspiring I can't wait to try it out tomorrow morning! Highly recommended for everyone looking to improve their health using simple but timeless ancient wisdom.
