An Entertaining Trip down Memory Lane at a reasonable price!

After Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Fantastic Four 64 & 65, Stan decided to collaborate with Gene Colan to create a sequel of sorts in Marvel Super Heroes #12 by featuring a new superhero with a familiar name: Captain Marvel (or Mar-vell as an alien race known as The Kree called him). I only bought a few of these issues in their original form through a mail-order company ad in a comic book until stores opened up locally and then it was a matter of limited supplies of this particular title due to the more popular books like X-Men and Amazing Spider-man dominating storage space. Now that I was able to purchase this collection, it not only filled in a number of gaps but also explained why this title continues to be "the one that most collectors forgot or never heard of." While Stan used the same soap opera formula that he employed in Amazing Spider-man and Nova and he featured an alien character that looked more human than the Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock, Roy Thomas and the other writers of this title had difficulty escaping the "alien spy fighting robots/big mutants/alien menaces while his loyalties are being questioned by everyone including himself" formula until Issue #11 when Our Hero's life takes a dramatic turn after a tragic personal loss and a complete "makeover" of his costume and new powers. I wouldn't give this series top marks in terms of its story content, but I can honestly say that I think that it was a title that had an ambitious start and it became more interesting when it escaped its rut and took chances with its character's development and I hope that this reprint series continues in the future due to its more reasonable price tag than the Marvel Masterworks that were issued a few years ago.
