Description: This book on essential outpatient clinical procedures is being published in its fourth edition. The previous edition was published in 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the majority of outpatient procedures one might need to perform in their daily practice of medicine.
Audience: The audience is every student preparing for a primary care practice. The authors and contributors are actively practicing clinicians and are highlighted in the accompanying videos showing a step-by-step visual of how to perform the procedures.
Features: The book includes 33 common outpatient procedures and additional chapters on specific and necessary additions such as informed consent, standard (infection control) procedures, sterile technique, patient education concepts, outpatient coding, procedural notes and documentation, and giving sad and bad news. Each description of a procedure includes background and history of the procedure, indications, contraindications, potential complications, essential anatomy and physiology, patient preparation, the materials and instruments necessary for the procedure, special considerations, and follow-up care and instructions. A video of each of the 33 procedures is available in the full-text electronic version on the Expert Consult Inkling platform.
Assessment: This is a tremendously comprehensive and detailed book and electronic version that teaches and offers memory aids for those learning how to perform outpatient procedures.
