Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Dalai Lama himself chose the selections in this collection of his core writings. The Essential Dalai Lama presents his teachings in four sections: "The Vision," "Buddhist Perspectives," "Practice," and "A World in Harmony." The essays cover topics including the quest for human happiness; the foundations of Buddhism; focusing the mind; the Buddhist perspective on the teachings of Jesus; and meditation. The ideal introduction to the teachings of a revered spiritual leader.

    Very informative, but somewhat bland

The Essential Dalai Lama is a novel portraying the beliefs and teachings of Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama for Tibetan Buddhism. The novel starts off talking about his vision for the human people and Buddhist perspectives on certain issues such as war, peace, government, other religions and so on. It then goes into the evaluation of one’s self and puts the Buddhist perspective in context of the real world. It then finishes off with meditation techniques for everyday people and how the Dalai Lama thinks the world should look like. Throughout the book, the Dalai Lama gives his perspective on things and addresses the audience about Buddhist ways and values. The author writes about compassion and tolerance and how with those two things, the world would be a much better place.
I found this book difficult to read cover to cover because it seemed the Dalai Lama repeated himself often and I found myself thinking about other things and not actually paying attention to the book. This caused me to reread passages and took longer for me to finish. This was a downside because it seemed much more boring than it was. However, I did enjoy learning about Buddhist ways and the Dalai Lama’s perspective on tolerance and how he believes the greatest downfall to man is their intelligence. He goes on to talk about how it has led to greed and violence as man tries to answer the unanswerable questions. Even tough this book was tough to get through, I thought it was beneficial read and full of learning.
Overall, This book is very intriguing, but rather bland at some points. I recommend this book to readers want to learn about different cultures or about other religions besides their own. It shares interesting ideals from one of the most influential people in the world today.
