Overview

Salvador Dali was without doubt one of the most inspirational and prolific artists of the twentieth century. Although his flirtation with Surrealism was relatively brief, he has become known as perhaps its greatest exponent, but it should be remembered that he also worked in many other genres.

Dali's talents were prodigious; not only was he a painter of abstracts and portraits, a superb draughtsman, printer, and illustrator, he was also a sculptor, a maker of ceramics, jewelry and furniture, and a costume designer. Above all, he was a consummate self-publicist, his mustachioed persona at times in danger of transcending his ability as an artist. However, it is quite likely that without this element of exhibitionism, combined with a healthy lust for commercial success, Dali would not have been driven to achieve the international fame and status that he is now accorded. Essential Dali examines his work in detail, highlighting the progress of his career, and showing how he returned time and time again to subject that both fascinated and intimidated him.

Dreams, Nightmares, Sleep, Sex, Hitler, War, Reality, and Death. Can you see them in Salvador Dali's work? This book will show you where to spot his meaning behind the painting. You will also see his sculptures and sketches, which he did to relax from the long, tiring painting process. I only gave 4 stars because I would like to find a book that went into greater detail about his symbolism, his biography, and his technics. The explanations in this book are short and to the point, which I both love and hate. This is a magnificent book to purchase, especially at this price!!! You cannot beat it!
