More About This Textbook
Overview
The Second Edition presents a compact and concise alternative to the larger histology texts on the market today. Great for students with a limited amount of time to devote to the subject. Improvements to the art program—adding more color and new illustrations—have been made to this edition.
This book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.
Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Alvin Telser, PhD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)Description: This is the second edition of a compact textbook of histology. The first edition was published in 1993.
Purpose: The author intends this book to be a brief, but high information content textbook of general histology for the medical or dental student who has limited time to study and learn the essentials of histology. This is one of many condensed histology books on the market. It meets the author's stated purposes in a admirable way.
Audience: The book is intended for beginning students of histology in any medical or dental school curriculum. As a rather brief textbook, it is suited only for such a purpose and would not be useful as a reference source for the more advanced student or faculty member. The author suggests in the preface that he would describe the intended audience in a similar manner. The author has written and/or coauthored several other histology texts and is well known for them.
Features: This book contains the usual chapters found in any histology book. The author emphasizes the cellular and molecular aspects of the structure-function relationships of histology throughout. There are many well-conceived and drawn diagrams of histological structures; albeit most of them are also found in earlier books by this author. There is an adequate number of diagrams and an acceptable number of light and electron micrographs. It is unfortunate that the color plates of the light micrographs and the color diagrams are printed in a separate, central section of the book. The print quality of the electron micrographs, generally, is too dark. The book has brief, but interesting and useful, clinical correlations in most chapters.
Assessment: In broad terms, this is a one of the better condensed or concise textbooks of histology. Professor Cormack writes in a clear, accurate, and knowledgeable style. He tends to place subject in a context that reflects modern research and understanding of histology with an emphasis on cell biology — an approach I favor. Even though modern histology has its origins over a century ago, new knowledge, new insights, and new techniques justify and require new editions every 4 to 6 years (the first edition is about eight years old). Students who rely on this book will learn basic histology quite well.
Alvin Telser
This is a basic condensed, compact text of histology. As such it is a new text, but it represents the third or fourth approach by the author to present accurate, up-to-date information on a core component of any health science curriculum. Two of the earlier texts by this author were coauthored with A. W. Ham. The author intends this to be a basic textbook of histology for first-time learners of this topic. There are many similar textbooks of the same material. This book is a contemporary extension of one of the classics of histology first published by Professor A. W. Ham. The book meets the author's stated objectives quite well. The intended audience is first-year medical or dental students, but it is suitable for college-level courses as well. There is significant overlap with competing texts. There are some useful new formulations or descriptions of concepts and facts. The text is rather brief compared with its peers, resulting in omission of some traditional information. The author has an established reputation for publishing books in this area. The number of illustrations is adequate, given that the subject material is essentially visual in nature. The quality of the illustrations is quite high. Sequestering the color plates in the center of the book rather than placing them in their natural location in the text detracts from their value. There are many other better color atlases that either stand alone or are part of a textbook of histology. The book is attractive with a striking color drawing on the cover. The use of two color printing and the wide right- and left-hand margins add to the appearance and readability of the book. The objective listed in a sidebar at the beginning ofeach chapter is a good idea, but seems somewhat artificial, because the impression is that each specific point was listed after the chapter was written. The objectives would be more useful if they required the student to synthesize (rather than repeat) information in the chapter. This is a useful book with a well-written and well-illustrated first chapter on techniques and interpretation of producing and understanding two-dimensional views of three-dimensional structures. It is well worth having in a library or as a supplementary text in a histology course.3 Stars from Doody
