Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Although this book covers a wide range of Internet and Web topics, it is not for the rank beginner. The layout and profusion of colorful photographic illustrations represent what one expects from this publisher. The sections on what the Internet is, how one searches the World Wide Web, and how to chose an Internet Service Provider (ISP) are well done and useful. Descriptions of various search engines and their features are presented well, although at least two search engines will have done major upgrades and thus will not look like what is pictured. The pages are full of clear screen shots, but they are specific to Windows 99 and an unstated version of Internet Explorer. The book is solely for PC compatibles and Microsoft products. There is no mention of Netscape as a browser, and only Outlook e-mail is described. Front Page is a special software addition, and anyone purchasing this product would need a complete guide to the software alone because the description offered here is much too brief. There are very specific instructions for connecting to the Internet, with descriptions on how to connect a modem to the service provider. If the reader has a version other than the two modems pictured, the descriptions offered would not help. Only a few technical terms used are explained in a very limited glossary. Because the reader is unlikely to mirror the exact software, modem, and ISP connection in this book, anyone who really needs the help of such a guide would be confused. Glossary. Index. Illus. Combining four volumes from the publisher's Essential Computers series, this guide provides illustrated tips, tricks, and techniques for owners of Windows-based PCs. The tutorial-style format uses many screenshots with step-by-step instructions. Coverage includes getting connected, browsing the Web (geared toward Microsoft Internet Explorer), searching the Net, using e-mail (specific to Microsoft Outlook), and building a Web site (using FrontPage).
