"The explosion of new information in recent years has challenged instructors of neuroscience to synthesize a diverse range of topics and present them in a way that's comprehensible to students. This first edition of Essential Neuroscience presents a solution." "Readers are presented with all of the basic neuroscience topics, but with a focus on the essential concepts and facts intrinsic to the practice of medicine. The result is a refreshing text that makes learning the subject matter simple yet meaningful." The authors begin with the analysis of a single neuron and then relate how neurons communicate with each other. Discussions progress to the anatomy of the spinal cord and brain, followed by a detailed examination of the sensory, motor, and integrative systems. This building-block approach helps students master the subject material and prepare for national board examinations.
Essential Neuroscience offers medical and health professions students a concise, clinically relevant text that gives equal weight to the branches of science represented within neuroscience: anatomy, physiology, biology, and chemistry. In this balanced treatment, it distinguishes itself from other competing textbooks.
Reviewer: Celso Agner, MD, MS, MSc (Michigan Neurology Partners) Description: The field of neuroscience experienced a major developmental explosion over the past few decades, most of which was related to the extensive acquisition of information from molecular biology, radiology, and neurology linked to the clinical presentation of patients with diverse neurological conditions. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to present basic neuroscience topics with a focus on concepts essential to the practice of medicine. Audience: Neurologists, neurosurgeons, medical students, neuroscientists, and health professionals involved in the management of patients with neurological conditions are the main audience. Features: As with most neuroscience books, this one uses a progressive systematic approach that includes the subdivisions of the nervous system, the diverse embryologic developmental steps of the brain and spinal cord, and basic neurovascular anatomy. Also in common with other neuroscience books, there is little explanation of the embryology of intracranial vessels and how variations and neurovascular syndromes should be approached and understood. A unique feature of the book is its correlation with easy Internet access and up-to-date information on basic science clinical correlations. However, it is hard to determine the necessity of a revised first edition. How much more information is presented? Is the manner in which the information is presented more effective for busy students getting ready for the USMLE exams? In my view, the answer to those questions is not certain, ditto the need for a revision. Assessment: This is a good book for medical students, neurologists, and professionals involved in the study of diseases of the central nervous system.
