Introduction

Who Needs This Book?

If you are asked to create a Web site using images, and your have a limited knowledge of creating Web images with Photoshop, this book is for you. By following along while we create the two example Web sites, you will acquire the knowledge necessary to create solutions to real-life problems.

This is more than just a bible or dictionary of Photoshop terms and tools. In those types of books you have to know what the tool can do in order to look up how to do it. And if you know what the tool can do, you probably don't have to be told how to use it.

This book answers real questions such as, "How do I take the green out of facial tones?" or "Now that I have an image, how do I make it a Web image?" This is not a reference book that will sit and gather dust on your library shelf. This book will sit on the edge of your desk with Post-It notes or bookmarks sticking out of your favorite pages. This book shows you how to get the job done.

How This Book Is Laid Out

You will follow along as two Web sites are created using Photoshop. Each chapter starts with a problem that requires a quick solution. We don't just point to the tools in Photoshop. We take you through each step, showing you several different ways to fix the problems. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter so you can practice the different techniques you learn.

The Projects

We'll be creating Web sites for two different types of companies. The first is Shelley Biotechnologies, a fast-growing biotech start-up. We've been asked to create a corporate site without many frills in the design area. Thesecond company is Stitch, an online fashion magazine. This project is a little more fun in the design area. Both Web sites present unique problems. Work alongside us as we take you through projects that allow you ample time and some that are deadline-sensitive.

An Introduction to Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is the best image-editing software available. If you can imagine it, you can do it with Photoshop. Photoshop is pixel-based softwareÑthat means that every image is made up of tiny little squares. If you zoom in as far as you can on any image in Photoshop, you will see that the picture is created with many little squares of color. Some drawing programs such as Illustrator or Freehand are vector-based, which means they can draw a perfect circle. Those applications assign the mathematical coordinates to each piece of the line. In order to manipulate those lines, you must move or alter the line segment. In Photoshop, you manipulate one pixel or square at a time. When you draw a circle it has to be made up of squares, and many little squares appear to be a perfect circle. Photoshop is a very powerful tool. In fact, almost every image you see in magazines and catalogs has been altered or manipulated in Photoshop.
