Reviewer: Amber R. Cooper, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a book for professionals studying reproduction that covers topics from gender selection to conception and parturition with both a basic and clinic flare.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide professionals studying reproduction, both in human and veterinary medicine, a comprehensive account of the fundamentals that comprise a complex set of hormonal, molecular, and behavioral series of events. The author does a good job eloquently describing a complex topic in an understandable and interesting way, from both a basic science and clinical perspective.
Audience: The book is written for students, residents, and professionals in medical, veterinary, and graduate/research programs.
Features: This book does an excellent job of taking a detailed field of study and presenting it as interesting, unique compilation of facts. It uniquely compares human reproduction with other mammalian species and also includes various clinical hot topics such as those that are politically, legally, and controversially debated both publicly and in the research sector.
Assessment: This sixth edition is justified due to the drastic volume of research and discovery in the last seven years. It is a unique compilation of basic and clinical aspects of reproduction in an understandable and eloquently written text.
