Overview

The eleven volumes of Augustine's Sermons to the People, translated by Fr. Edmund Hill (1990-1997) in clear contemporary English, showcase Augustine the brilliant speaker and engaging preacher of the Word. They have proven an indispensable resource for contemporary scholars, who laud Hills expert translation and extensive notes. But professors have clamored for an affordable one-volume anthology designed for undergraduate, graduate, and seminary classes.

From the Bishops finest preaching, Fr. Doyle has selected sermons that represent a wide range of subjects, including God, Christ, sin, grace, conversion, martyrdom, sacraments, marriage, wealth, poverty, Christmas, Easter, and living the Christian life. Students and preachers alike will discover Augustine's message as well as his medium: his masterful interpretation of the Word of God and his creative use of Ciceronian rhetoric to engage the people of God. Fr. Doyle has provided a concise introduction to Augustine's preaching and a convenient table of themes for easy consultation.

Midwest Book Review
Skillfully and accessibly translated into modern English by Father Edmund Hill, Essential Sermons is an astutely chosen selection of the sermons of Augustine of Hippo (354-430). Featuring a new introduction and notes by Father Daniel Doyle, Essential Sermons reveals a level of genius and insight that transcend his era. "Man's first ruin was caused by love of self.

I have read thousands of books in my life. This recent read has moved to the top of my list. Augustine organizes your mind so you can understand the most complex theology. He reaches into your heart and makes you cry. He speaks to you plainly and makes you laugh. And you'll learn more from this one book than you have from many hundreds of others. It is a wonderful book for morning prayers and meditations -- to see and feel the hand of God upon you.

Having read several of St. Augustine's sermons and letters in the Liturgy of Hours, Office of Readings, I became more interested in his writings. The Essential Sermons is a book that has been translated from Latin, and has his sermons and teachings on many aspects of the Catholic Church, in an organized way, so that reading his writings leaves the reader wanting to read more. He blends Scripture with the Teachings of the Church in a way that is like having a conversation with him. It is an affordable way to read such inspiring, life-changing, and motivating material from one of the Churches greatest Saints, and teachers.
